As someone who has personally experienced pregnancy nausea, I send you all the empathy in the world! It’s no joke to feel unwell for weeks (months) on end. Keep trying to nourish yourself in small ways. If your nausea is mild, consider the tips below. They really help! If you have more severe nausea and vomiting, make sure you are receiving appropriate medical care. It is not something to mess around with!

Did you have pregnancy nausea? What helped you to survive your pregnancy nausea?

1. Ginger

You may have already tried ginger tea or ginger chews and not found them effective. But what about grating raw ginger and making your own tea or ginger capsules? (Up to 1g daily is considered safe during pregnancy). Sometimes the potency needs to be increased to have a therapeutic effect. If you are drinking gingerale, make sure there is real ginger in it.

2. Acupuncture

I don’t think we utilize acupuncture enough to relieve pregnancy nausea. If it is not covered by your insurance, “Community Acupuncture” models are making this option even more affordable and accessible.

3. Breaking the hunger --> nausea cycle

You may not feel like eating a big steak or chicken curry (does that make you feel nauseated thinking of it?), but considerbland proteins like a Greek Yogurt smoothie with frozen banana and almond butter, a hard boiled egg, add bone broth to soup, or add collagen peptides powder to a warm beverage. Eating bland protein every couple hours will stave off that vicious low blood sugar —> nausea cycle.

4. Electrolytes

Feeling nauseated and limited food/fluid intake can lead to mineral depletion. Mineral depletion and dehydration can then make you feel more nauseous! A quick fix can be adding in some electrolytes. Staying hydrated can also help with constipation, which can be another sneaky source of nausea!

5. Consider Swapping out your Vitamins

Iron found in most prenatal tabs and capsules can contribute to additional nausea, constipation, and digestive upset. Swap out more irritating forms like ferrous sulfate for more bioavailable and gentle forms like ferrous bisgylcinate.Check in with your care provider to confirm levels and necessity based on labs.
