Protecting Your Little One: Favorite Non-Toxic Baby Products
Feb 25, 2024Introduction
National Resources Defense Council's (NRDC) concerning research regarding “forever chemicals” in umbilical blood sampling shows that babies are introduced to toxins before they are even born. How can we provide baby with a safe extrauterine environment? One way to do this is to be thoughtful about the products we choose for our baby.
Do I think we can go overboard with a “nontoxic lifestyle?
Yes.
Much like orthorexia and being overly concerned with “cleaning eating”, it can be easy to be have an unhealthy amount of “chemophobia” or fear of chemicals. It is all about striking a BALANCE and deciding where you want to focus. We certainly were not militant about being completely non-toxic with our babies. But I do think we can mitigate some of our kids exposure to EDCs (endocrine disrupting chemicals) by being thoughtful consumers. And perhaps more importantly, we can invest in high quality non-toxic items that stand the test of time and can be passed along to little siblings, friends, community members in need, and perhaps even the next generation.
Tell me in the comments, what else would you add?
Favorite Non-Toxic Baby Products
1. ORGANIC BABY CLOTHING
Investing in organic clothing made from natural fibers ensures that your baby's delicate skin is free from harmful chemicals. Look for options made from organic cotton or bamboo, as they are soft, breathable, and free from pesticides. Flame retardants are sneakily added to pajamas.
Favorites: My favorite brand is Lewis for thick, organic cotton onesies, swaddles, and pajamas. Woolino sleep sack is another favorite. The merino wool is very soft and NOT itchy and adjusts to the climate around your baby for optimal temperature regulation.
2. NATURAL DIAPERS
Consider eco-friendly diaper options that are chlorine-free and made from sustainable materials. Brands like Dyper offer diapers that are gentle on your baby's skin and the environment. We tried cloth diapers briefly with our two kids and it just didn't work well for our family. We experimented with a lot of different diapers and Dyper kept our kids dry and rash-free.
Favorites: Dyper Bamboo Diapers and 7th Generation Wipes
3. NON TOXIC TOYS
Choose toys made from non-toxic materials such as wood, organic cotton, or BPA-free plastics. These alternatives eliminate the risk of harmful chemical exposure during your baby's playtime. These rules apply for tethers as well. Try to find pure silicone or food-grade materials.
Favorites: Bannor Teether, Kendi non-toxic bath toys from Maisonette
4. NATURAL SKIN CARE PRODUCTS
Opt for baby skincare products with simple, natural ingredients. My friend Jenna has a beautiful natural skincare line, LINNE, that has nontoxic products that are also suitable for babies. Look goer the "LINNE BEBE" collection. (And wonderful pregnancy-safe products in the "Maternal Collection" as well. Always look for salves, baby massage oil, shampoo, and diaper creams free from parabens, dyes, sulfates, and artificial fragrances. I love Dr. Bronner's baby soap too (our whole family uses it). Babies really should have much on their skin in the first 6 weeks except breastmilk rubbed into a rash or any irritated spot.
Favorites: Linne Bebe, Dr. Bronner's Baby Soap. Wrap baby up in a Willaby towel after their bath!
5. ECO FRIENDLY NURSERY ESSENTIALS
From crib mattresses to bedding, select items that prioritize sustainability and non-toxicity. Look for certifications like GREENGUARD for low chemical emissions in furniture and Oeko-Tex Standard 100 for textiles. I love Lewis organic crib sheets and Kalon non-toxic cribs. No off-gassing or EDCs (endocrine disrupting chemicals). It is an investment, but an investment to be passed down to the next generation.
Favorites: Lewis Home, Kalon Studios cribs, Willaby organic gauze blanket (The best blanket and baby gift. gets even softer with washes!) Make sure to wash your bedding with products like Branch Basics which are safe for baby's sensitive skin. Avocado natural crib mattress is also worth the investment!
6. NON-TOXIC FEEDING and SOOTHING ACCESSORIES
When it comes to feeding, choose BPA-free bottles, silicone nipples, and non-toxic dishware. Stainless steel or glass options for baby bottles are durable and free from harmful chemicals found in some plastics. Once your baby is starting to eat solids, consider bamboo, stainless steel, and silicone for them instead of plastic.
Favorites: BIBS non toxic pacifiers and Bottles. Dr. Brown's Glass Bottles. Avanchy Bamboo and silicone feeding supplies
7. ECO-FRIENDLY BABY CARRIERS, NAPPING GEAR, PLAY MATS
Where your baby naps outside of their crib space is important too! Consider baby carriers, bouncers, and play mats made from natural fibers.
Favorites: Charlie Crane Levo rocker. Snuggle Me Organic Infant Lounger, Design Dua Moses basket Norlha TIbetan Wool play mat, Artipoppe linen and organic cotton baby carrier, Overland Sheepskin, Binibamba sheepskin stroller sack if you live in a colder climate.
8. SOME FINAL ITEMS TO CONSIDER
- Nuna nontoxic carseat
- Himalayan Salt Lamp for natural lighting in the nursery which also cleans the air and protects against EMF!
- Wishgarden herbs "Colic Ease" for natural colic support
