Pregnancy Safe Makeup, non-toxic beauty guide
Sep 25, 2024Ok here’s a light and fun post!
This is NOT to add to the long list of things that might make you feel anxious during pregnancy, but it does matter what you put onto your skin, including makeup. (I will do a post on skincare soon!) Here are the salient points:
π in general, it’s difficult for a topical product to cause any harm. You really do have to think about relative risk and overall surface area that’s being covered, the amount of the product use, and how often it’s being used. For instance, if you accidentally used a product with salicylates in it, it is OK! Your baby will be Ok! It is lots of exposure and chronic use that increases risk. And STILL there are very few “high risk” beauty products out there.
π powders, eye liner, mascara, brow pencils are the least risky since so little of those products is absorbed by the skin. So if you have a drugstore mascara, you love, go for it!
π become a detective reading labels! It is far to easy pick up a “natural” products that does contain harmful ingredients as there is so much greenwashing and so little oversight in the US compared to other countries. So always good to scan the Ingredients.
πsome key ingredients to avoid include: fragrance, talc, SLS, parabens, formaldehyde, phthalates, and artificial colors. The tricky thing is that many of these ingredients have “other” sneaky names. And “Fragrance” is often an umbrella term for a long list of endocrine disruptors.
π because it can be so difficult difficult to read ingredients, consider using the Environmental Working Group (EWG) to check the product. It is a wonderful FREE resource.
π if you are looking to optimize your products and have them be as non-toxic as possible for pregnancy and lactation, I will send you a guide with my top ten favorites and some products to avoid, even from “clean beauty” companies. Just comment “GUIDE”.
πFavorite non-toxix brands are Ogee, Tata Harper, Kjer Weiss, RMS, Westman Atelier, Ogee, and Ilia
